Transportation disruptions ahead

SWHRL residents should be aware of two traffic disruptions at the end of the month.

  1. The Goose Hollow Foothills League will be closing the Vista Bridge to all traffic on August 30th for the 100th Anniversary Party of the bridge. Neither they nor PBOT have shared details on timing, signage or preferred alternate routes with us, but their event starts at 11AM and runs until 4PM. Walk down and enjoy the party, and then come back up for our Safety and Risiliency Event! https://www.swhrl.org/wp/safety-and-survival-summit-8-30/

2. The other disruption will be larger and longer as ODOT works on the I-5/84 area for several weeks starting September 11th. https://i5rosequarter.org/current-construction-travel-impacts/#Southbound

Even though it may not seem to be a SWHRL issue, we anticipate a large amount of traffic to cut through our neighborhoods as 405 and 26 back up. This will be especially dangerous for kids walking to schools or bus stops.

This event also allows me to share one of my favorite images from the City of Portland Archives – a 1962 map of the proposed Stadium Freeway from (apparently disgruntled) State Highway Dept Metropolitan Engineer Lloyd Shaw.

He was apparently psychic as well as disgruntled, as we suspect the online traffic maps will look exactly like this come September.
